Central Ohio Students: Back-to-School Eye Exam Checklist

New backpacks, school supplies, and updated schedules are common back-to-school priorities, but clear, comfortable vision deserves a place on the list too. At The Solution Center in Westerville and our Lewis Center location, we help Central Ohio students start the school year with the visual skills they need for reading, writing, screen use, sports, and everyday classroom activities.

Schedule a Comprehensive Back-to-School Eye Exam

A school vision screening is helpful, but it is not the same as a comprehensive pediatric eye exam. Screenings typically focus on basic visual acuity, while a complete eye exam evaluates how well the eyes see, focus, track, and work together.

An annual eye exam also gives us an opportunity to identify prescription changes and eye health concerns before they begin interfering with schoolwork. Scheduling before or early in the school year gives families time to address any concerns and update glasses or other treatment when needed.

Use This Back-to-School Eye Exam Checklist

Before classes get fully underway, Central Ohio parents should make sure their student's vision needs are covered:

•          Schedule a comprehensive pediatric eye exam

•          Bring current glasses or contact lenses to the appointment

•          Mention headaches, eye strain, blurred vision, or double vision

•          Tell us about difficulty reading, concentrating, or keeping a place on the page

•          Ask whether your child's prescription has changed

•          Discuss increasing nearsightedness or a family history of myopia

•          Make sure glasses fit securely and comfortably for school and activities

Sharing concerns about your child's reading habits, screen use, sports, or classroom performance helps us better understand how their vision functions throughout the day.

Watch for Vision Problems During the School Year

Children do not always recognize that their vision is causing a problem. They often assume everyone sees the way they do. Watch for frequent squinting, sitting unusually close to screens, covering one eye, losing their place while reading, avoiding near work, rubbing their eyes, or complaining about headaches after school. A student who sees the eye chart clearly can still have difficulties with focusing, eye tracking, or eye teaming.

Do Not Ignore Increasing Nearsightedness

If your child's distance vision is becoming blurrier or their glasses prescription keeps increasing, ask us about myopia management. Myopia commonly develops during childhood and can progress as children grow.

Early evaluation allows us to measure changes and determine whether a personalized myopia management plan is appropriate. The goal is not only to provide clear vision for school, but also to address how nearsightedness progresses over time.
